Fans waiting for Tomb Raider: Catalyst will have to be patient a little longer. During a recent interview discussing Amazon's gaming strategy, Amazon Games executive Jeffrey Gattis confirmed that the highly anticipated next mainline Tomb Raider game has been pushed back from its previously announced 2027 release window to 2028.

Meanwhile, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis remains scheduled to launch on February 12, 2027, giving Lara Croft fans a major adventure before the franchise's next original installment arrives.

Tomb Raider: Catalyst Officially Moves to 2028

The confirmation came during an interview with The Game Business, where Amazon Games' Head of Gaming, Jeffrey Gattis, outlined the company's publishing roadmap.

According to Gattis:

"We've announced the two Tomb Raider titles. Atlantis comes February 12 next year, and then we'll follow on in 2028 with the next one."

While Crystal Dynamics has yet to release a separate announcement regarding the delay, Gattis' comments effectively confirm that Tomb Raider: Catalyst is no longer targeting a 2027 launch.

Legacy of Atlantis Still Launches in February 2027

The delay does not affect Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, the Unreal Engine 5 remake of Lara Croft's original adventure.

Current release details include:

  • Release Date: February 12, 2027
  • Platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2
  • Modernized gameplay mechanics
  • Expanded exploration
  • Completely rebuilt environments in Unreal Engine 5

Legacy of Atlantis was previously delayed from 2026 to early 2027, making it likely that Amazon preferred to give the remake room to shine before launching another major Tomb Raider title.

Why Was Tomb Raider: Catalyst Delayed?

Although Amazon hasn't provided a detailed explanation, the revised schedule makes strategic sense.

Launching two major Tomb Raider games in the same year could have divided the audience and marketing efforts. By spacing the releases roughly a year apart, Amazon and Crystal Dynamics can:

  • Give Legacy of Atlantis its own marketing window.
  • Build anticipation for the next mainline Tomb Raider.
  • Allow additional development time for Catalyst.
  • Reduce the risk of franchise fatigue.

Many fans had already speculated this would happen after Legacy of Atlantis moved into 2027. The latest comments simply make the new timeline official.

What We Know About Tomb Raider: Catalyst

Although details remain limited, Tomb Raider: Catalyst is expected to be:

  • The next mainline Tomb Raider game.
  • Developed by Crystal Dynamics.
  • Built using Unreal Engine 5.
  • Featuring an entirely new Lara Croft adventure.
  • Published by Amazon Games.

The game is positioned as the franchise's biggest new entry since Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

Updated Tomb Raider Release Timeline

  • February 12, 2027Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis launches on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2.
  • Originally Planned for 2027Tomb Raider: Catalyst was initially announced for a 2027 release window.
  • Now Scheduled for 2028 – Amazon Games has confirmed that Tomb Raider: Catalyst has been delayed and is now expected to launch sometime in 2028.

This revised roadmap means Legacy of Atlantis will arrive first, giving fans a chance to revisit Lara Croft's adventures before the next mainline Tomb Raider title debuts in 2028.

What This Means for Tomb Raider Fans

While another delay is disappointing, giving Crystal Dynamics more development time could ultimately benefit the final product. Recent AAA releases have shown that additional polish often leads to stronger launches, and spacing out the two Tomb Raider titles may help each game receive the attention it deserves.

With Legacy of Atlantis arriving first in February 2027, fans will still have a new Lara Croft adventure to enjoy while waiting for Catalyst in 2028.
