God of War Laufey Confirmed for Physical Release, All But Locking In a 2027 Launch
Santa Monica Studio confirms God of War Laufey will get a physical disc release, which, paired with Sony's 2028-disc cutoff, points to an early 2027 launch.

A Disc Confirmation With Bigger Implications
God of War Laufey still doesn't have an official release date, but a recent social media exchange has effectively narrowed the window regardless. Amid ongoing backlash over Sony's decision to end physical game production, Santa Monica Studio confirmed directly that Laufey "will be available on disc." On its own that might read as a routine reassurance to physical media collectors, but combined with Sony's stated January 2028 cutoff for new disc releases, it functions as an unofficial release window: Laufey has to ship before that date to make good on the promise.
That timing lines up closely with what multiple insiders have already been saying. NateTheHate, who correctly identified Faye as the game's protagonist months before the reveal, has pointed to the first half of 2027. Jason Schreier has similarly pushed back against theories of a 2028 launch, and has floated February or March 2027 as a likely window, partly to avoid landing in the same release season as Grand Theft Auto 6.
What We Know About the Game So Far
God of War Laufey was revealed at PlayStation's State of Play in June 2026 with an extended 20-minute gameplay segment. The game marks a first for the franchise: rather than Kratos, players will step into the role of Faye, Kratos's late wife, who wakes unexpectedly in the afterlife of the gods after her own death and must fight to protect the plans she set in motion to keep her family safe. Santa Monica has described the combat as more aggressive and dynamic than recent mainline entries, a shift that's already generated some divided reaction among longtime fans hoping for a more traditional God of War structure.
Santa Monica will discuss the game further at a San Diego Comic-Con panel on July 24, featuring Game Director Ariel Lawrence and Head of Creative Cory Barlog, though panels like this rarely double as hard release date reveals.
Our Take
A disc confirmation isn't the same as an official release date, but paired with Sony's physical media deadline, it's about as close to one as fans are going to get for now. If the insider consensus of early 2027 holds, Laufey would arrive at a remarkably tight distance from its 2026 reveal by modern AAA standards. We'll be watching for any concrete announcement out of the Comic-Con panel later this month.
